As someone who loves to travel, there are a few tips I go by to make trips run a little smoother. There’s nothing like little snags and hold ups in travel to mess up long awaited travel plans. You may have spent weeks or even months in advance planning a trip, don’t let these simple mistakes affect you.
Well, there are some things that happen beyond your control. For example, flight delays or cancellations. Many a time, I have sat in an airport for hours while my flight was delayed for 3+ hours. Or how about those nasty counter agents, not always very friendly, are they? However, there are simple things you can manage to keep your plans in line.
- Connection Problems: How long do you typically leave for connecting flights? I know sometimes half an hour to an hour sounds great. Less time sitting at an airport, twiddling your thumbs, etc…but is it really worth it? In a huge airport, you might have to change terminals to get to your connecting flight. And if the first flight is running late, all of a sudden, your hour has shrunk to 15min –don’t forget the gate also closes half hour prior to take off time. Are you ready to run? The solution: Leave yourself at least an hour and a half between your connecting flights. Cushioning time and time for a quick snack if needed.
- Stuck at the Security Checkpoint: Sound familiar? Security checkpoints are always slow for several factors: slow moving people and well, you might have a ton of stuff to dig through and sort through. Be sure to give yourself ample time to get through those, especially if you’re hitting up one of the busier airports. Decreasing the amount of stuff you’re carrying and need to rummage through can speed up your time as well. I know someone who wears flip flops through, has her laptop in easy reach, and minimizes what she needs to do so she makes going through security as quick as possible. And I mean quick, she’s usually got her stuff laid down and through in a matter of 30 seconds.
- Parking at the Airport: Do you park at the airport? That can not only cost a ton but also hard to navigate. If you ask me, I’d rather spend all that money on the vacation instead. Get your friends or family to drop you off. It even saves time trying to find that perfect parking spot.
- Ground Transport Hassles: So, you’ve made it to the destination city, did you figure out how to get to your hotel? Is there a shuttle? Have you prearranged ground transportation? I typically look into it but you might be surprised that many travellers haven’t looked ahead. Did you know it’s cheaper to book a shuttle or look into taxi rates prior to arrival? Maybe your hotel has a free shuttle. However, it’s always nice to know approximate prices prior to leaving home so you don’t get cheated out of your hard earned money.
Vacation is meant to be relaxing. Don’t mess up on these travel mistakes and ruin your hard earned relaxation. Plan ahead and reap the rewards.
